Medical students are required to successfully complete an American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) course before completion of the first year of medical school and again prior to completion of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course for the third-year clinical rotations. BLS is offered during first year orientation with recertification at the beginning of the third year. ACLS is required in the fourth year.  Students who present BLS or equivalent certification which is valid through the end of the academic year in which it is required (1st or 3rd) will be exempt from this requirement.
